Gynalac Vaginal Gel is a non-antibiotic gel that helps relieve and prevent the symptoms of bacterial vaginosis (BV) and non-specific vaginitis: abnormal discharge, unpleasant odour, itching and burning. It works by bringing vaginal pH back into its normal, acidic range, which supports the healthy bacteria that keep BV in check.

Gynalac is a Health Canada licensed natural health product (NPN 80077445) made by Tyros Biopharma, and its packaging carries the Society of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists of Canada (SOGC) Recognized logo. Each 35 mL tube holds about 10 applications and comes with a reusable applicator.

How Gynalac Works

A healthy vagina is mildly acidic, with a pH of about 3.8 to 4.5. That acidity comes from lactobacilli, the "good" bacteria that produce lactic acid. When the number of lactobacilli drops, pH rises and other bacteria can overgrow. That shift is bacterial vaginosis, the most common cause of abnormal vaginal discharge.

Gynalac combines two ingredients your body already makes:

  • Lactic acid lowers vaginal pH back toward its normal range, creating conditions where lactobacilli can recover.
  • Sodium hyaluronate (a form of hyaluronic acid) hydrates and soothes irritated vaginal tissue.

What Gynalac Helps With

  • Relieves and helps prevent symptoms of bacterial vaginosis and non-specific vaginitis
  • Helps eliminate abnormal vaginal odour
  • Helps eliminate abnormal vaginal discharge
  • Restores and maintains a normal vaginal pH
  • Restores and maintains healthy vaginal flora
  • Relieves itching and burning

BV or a Yeast Infection?

The two are easy to confuse, but they need different products. BV usually causes a thin grey or white discharge with a fishy odour that is often stronger after sex. A yeast infection usually causes a thick, white discharge with intense itching and little odour. Gynalac is for BV symptoms, not yeast infections, and it may sting if the vaginal tissue is already irritated or has small tears.

If this is your first time with these symptoms, or you are not sure what is causing them, see your healthcare provider for a diagnosis. Learn more in our guide to bacterial vaginosis symptoms and treatments.

How to Use

Insert one 3 mL dose of gel into the vagina with the applicator, preferably at bedtime.

  • To relieve BV symptoms: once daily for 7 days in a row.
  • To help prevent BV from coming back: once daily for 3 days right after your period, every month for at least 6 months.
  • After antibiotics: once daily for 3 days after you finish your antibiotic treatment.

Wash the applicator with warm, soapy water and let it dry after each use.

Cautions

  • Do not use if you are trying to get pregnant. Lactic acid can neutralize alkaline semen.
  • Do not use if you are allergic to any of the ingredients.
  • Redness, burning or itching may occur, especially with a yeast infection or small tears in the vaginal tissue. If irritation continues, stop using Gynalac and speak with your healthcare provider.
  • Gynalac can be used during pregnancy and breastfeeding. If a vaginal infection develops during pregnancy, contact your healthcare provider.
  • See your healthcare provider if your symptoms get worse or do not go away.

    Is Gynalac an antibiotic?

No. Gynalac uses lactic acid and sodium hyaluronate to bring vaginal pH back into its normal acidic range. It contains no antibiotics. Some cases of BV still need prescription treatment, so speak with your healthcare provider if your symptoms do not improve.

How do I know if it is BV or a yeast infection?

BV often causes a thin, grey or white discharge with a fishy odour, especially after sex. A yeast infection usually causes thick, white discharge and strong itching without much odour. Gynalac is for BV symptoms, and it may sting if used during a yeast infection. If you are unsure, see your healthcare provider for a diagnosis.

Can I use Gynalac after antibiotics?

Yes. Use one 3 mL application daily for 3 days after you finish your antibiotic treatment to help restore a normal vaginal balance.

Can I use it during pregnancy or while breastfeeding?

Gynalac can be used during pregnancy and breastfeeding. If you develop a vaginal infection while pregnant, contact your healthcare provider.

Can I use it if I am trying to get pregnant?

No. Lactic acid can neutralize alkaline semen, so do not use Gynalac while trying to conceive.

How long does one tube last?

A 35 mL tube holds about 10 applications of 3 mL: enough for a full 7-day treatment, or several 3-day courses for prevention.
